For the past two years, the BBC's cameras have been tracking the work of Dr. Sheperd Doeleman from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Event Horizon Telescope project team, which is a collective of top scientific talents from around the world. This project combines radio observatories and telescope facilities from around the world to form a virtual telescope with a diameter spanning the entire planet. The ultimate mission of this giant telescope is to capture the first image of a black hole in history. Although the concept of black holes has long been considered a fact, the success of the Event Horizon Telescope will provide clear evidence for the existence of this scientific phenomenon and provide clear visual evidence for the first time. The program takes the audience to the laboratory, behind computer screens and next to telescopes, which may prove to be one of the great achievements in astrophysics in human history.
